It's an addiction.....

What motivates otherwise normal people to brave the cold atlantic waters in the desire to kitesurf, even on the coldest, darkest of miserable winters days?

It never ceases to amaze me that there are always plenty keen enough to do so, indeed any day there is a decent breeze you'll now find a crew of hard core kitesurfers filling thier boots, driven by the need for adrenalin.

No need for gloves or hoods just yet

Freestyle warriors, wave riders or simply just "mowing the lawn" it doesnt matter as long they're out there come rain sleet or snow all sharing the same simple passion that is kitesurfing!

Then again with the correct gear it's no longer as hard core as it used to be, gone are days of marrigolds. Now we have super efficient and flexible neoprene...thermal rash vests, hoods, boots and gloves that can handle the harshest of winter conditions.

As the numbers of kitesurfers continue to increase the more vans you can also find in the beach carparks, lined up with the heaters on full blast. Inside any one of these cosy wagons you'll find a social gathering of like minded adrenaline junkies, searching for thier next (natural) fix.

We have had probably the best autumn/winter period we have ever had here in the UK, since September it's blown and it's blown bloody hard too with mild westerly storms one after another pushing through. Most of our sessions here have been on 5's & 7's with a splattering of 9m Sessions also...but no need for 12m

I find that if I go for more than a week without a session my mood changes, doesn't matter how bad the session is either, it will still be enough to give you a lift.

As I write this it looks like we are about to enter a calmer period with cold easterlies forecast, temperatures are likely to drop drastically but at least we may get some snow sessions too...another fix!

It's an addiction, simple as!

So......been using the EPIC Screamers for a while now and getting more and more dialed into them, the past few days we have had some awsome winter sessions here in S.Wales

Big strong gusty man winds, just right for the 7m Screamer. Man this kite is insane, love it"

When I did this video I wasn't landing many at all but since then we've had three more mega days and I'm stoked to be landing most of them and happy to throw them down now!
Starting the loops a little earlier and letting the power off a bit more on the approach to landings. I've even started to do a second loop to soften the landings even more.

Rather than the usual video I thought I'd try a different angle....completely!

Smallest kite's only needed!

The winds have been pretty mental here the past few days and quite honestly pretty dangerous for kiting, being so gusty. Today the winds were 30-50mph so we did the right thing and didn't bother.
We were very tempted though as the surf was huge and Coney Beach right near our house has been going off!

I also decided to put my beloved board in for repair since I reckon it only had a few more sessions left in it anyway with a nasty crack wrapping around the rail near my front foot. Let's hope Roger Cooper can work his wonders whilst we are away snowboarding for a week!

Whilst walking the dog each day I was able to get a few photo's of both Coney Beach and the Pier getting hit by a few large ones!

This winter has been the best that I have know..ever!

It's been incredibly mild and the winds have been constant now since October...through November and now all of December too!

Each week has thrown another week of solid strong conditions....and plenty of surf too!

Saturday 17th December - The day the snow arrived!

We made the effort to get up the Brecon Beacons on Saturday 17th December, fueled by the weather forecasts for our 1st snowfall of the winter so far. We arrived to find only a small amount of snow covering the lower areas near the carpark.

We met a few other keen kitesurfers eager to try the snow but as the snow cover looked so bad they headed off back to the coast, we decided to walk the dog up the mountain anyway and once up higher were pleasantly surprised to find plenty of depth to the fresh snow.

We then had to hike back to the van to get the kites and boards etc and once again trek back to the top - it was worth it though!

We had a few hours playing in pretty strong winds on the Epic Renegade 7m kite before we packed up to head back the 45mins to Porthcawl.

Rest Bay greeted us with a nice strong cross-shore wind and a super nice 3-4ft wave.We all had one of the best sessions i can remeber with the sun slowly setting on an amazing day here in S.Wales.

As it happened we had the Blast Xmas Bash that evening so by 7.30pm we were out with good freinds in the local pub for a well earned meal and one or two drink's too!

All in all, an amazing day!

So we just got hold of the latest GoPro HD2 the new updated version of this now classic little video camera.

These camera's have been making shakes in pretty much every extreme sports due to their compact and yet rugged nature, oh and their amazing quality footage too!

We have just had some amazing conditions and it's a shame we didnt have it here in time for those epic sessions but we have plenty more coming next week. Today we had some nice beach break fun though and was perfect conditions to play around with the camera and get to grips with exactly what it can do.

We managed to get some awesome footage and also some half decent photo's as seen here:

Today's session was also the first time we have had the chance to try the all new 2012 Blankforce Advisory Carbon Board....this board has a lot to live up to but...WOW
This board seems even smoother than the last one but still has an insane amount of pop. These boards just make you want to try new stuff...every session.

South Wales Point Breaks...............

We are so lucky in S.Wales to have so many reef and point breaks scattered along our wonderful coatline!
These also work on our predominant S.Westerly winds and provide clean wave faces but the winds can still be hoofing in.

Today we lucky enough to have a visit from 3 x Bitish Champion Will Bennet all the way from deepest pasty land.

We met at our house and Blast HQ for a catch up and a quick brew, Will had already had a sneaky peak at another point break on the way to ours and reported a decent swell and some strong westerlies too.

Anyway Will, Sarah and a mate Daniel and I made the short trip to our local Point Break..about 500m from our Blast HQ, we were met with a nice if a little small right hander firing off clean waves ready to be smashed!

Here are a few pics that my daughter Katie took for us, pretty sweet job especially considering she'd never take kitesurf photo's before....proud of me girlie!

Circle One have been a major player in the surf industry since 1969 and they have a long pedigree. It is very exciting therefore to see a true surf brand recognise kiting as a market worthy of their presence. For years now kiters have been trying to get recognition from the huge surf industry and bit-by-bit it seems we are getting there. Circle One have developed 4 boards for this season, a 6’6” Quad Fin Square Tail, a 6’3” Swallow Tail, a 6’ Diamond Tail and finally the 5’8” Round Tail that we have here. In that range there should be something for everyone, if you are new to the kite SURFboard market then a good rule of thumb is to choose a board 2 inches shorter than yourself. This will allow you to have enough size and buoyancy to be able to gybe it, but also mean the board will be big enough to be able to surf the wave, rather than just kite along it.

Jeff Townsley who founded the company way back when has shaped the 5’8” and he is one of the more experienced shapers out there. The board is quite narrow at 17 and three quarters but there is a good amount of volume under the feet just where you need it. It utilises a lightweight construction with vinyl reinforcing and although as with all surfboards it will need looking after it certainly withstands the knocks of day-to-day riding. The fin set up is the classic thruster lay out and high quality honeycomb fins come as standard. The great thing is that although the fins aren’t FCS the fin boxes will take FCS fins, so should you find yourself hitting the reef in a far-flung location it shouldn’t prove too difficult to get a replacement! The overall finish and look of the board is excellent, the graphics are simple and the board looks like a surfboard should, not like some 9 year old has been let loose with a set of crayons

Epic Kites - Dealer Week USA

I have just returned from an Epic Dealer Trip to Cape Hattaras in North Carolina USA.

Screamers & Renegade

It gave me the chance to try each kite back to back in a huge range of conditions, ideal testing grounds!

We were provided with amazing accomodation right on the beach in Nags head and each day we'd check the conditions then decide which beach to head too....flat water slicks on the Sound side or head high surf on the Atlantic side.
Dimitri is, well he's Dimitri!!
Crazy, on and off the water he's simply 100mph. This made for an action packed week with non stop kiting every day.
His enthusiasm is amazing and very very infectious, it was amazing to see and witness so many people who tried the kites there. There were so many genuine stoked people loving the kites and boards.

There are basically three kites in the range:

Renegade: Do-all kite, beginner, freeride, wave

Screamer: Old school boosting machine (the highest I have jumped)

Judge: New School Freestyle C Kite
and then there is also the Infinity Light wind kite, a true light wind kite that you can still have fun on inc jumps etc

We have just returned from an "epic" trip to North Portugal where we scored an awesome swell from the tail end of Hurricane Katia... 7 days trip, 7 days strong winds!

We also scored some sweet flat water sessions during the week in between swells!

Over the past few months we have been trying to sort out a date with Ian from ExPix http://www.expix.co.uk/ for doing a lifestyle photo shoot arranged by Blankforce Boards!

Eventually we had the whole range in...each size and model comes in a different colour so there are lots!

We were up in Mid Wales testing the latest Epic Kites which we had just taken stock of and had to set off early back home to Porthcawl. Ian on the other had was on his way back from the Atlantic Games with Hannah Whitely and Will makinson all the way back up too Manchester.

They had a horrific trip up to us with one traffic accident after another and finally arrived with us at about 4pm. The light was pretty poor and the wind virtually non existant, however this didnt stop Ian cracking on with the job in hand.

Ian got a load of sweet lifestyle shots on the rocks over near my favorite wave riding spot. This was with aid of our two resident "models" .....Tom Butler and Sarah Eager (both Blast Kiteboarding Instructors and team riders)

Later we thought it worth checking the wind as it was now looking (slightly) prommising. Tom quickly pumped up his Mutiny 12m P.Series and Sarah her Genetrix Origin2

Ian eventually ended up to his waist in the sea snapping away in what was pretty poor conditions with a very flat light and very light winds too.

However Ian gave us a few sneak peaks at some of his shots, both lifestyles and action...WOW

I cant believe the quality of the shots Ian was able to get..simply awesome.

We'll post some up here once we get permission to use some but believe me they make mine above look simply pants!

Blast Kiteboarding mini Road Trip

So we had no wind forecast pretty much for the whole of the UK this past week so we thought we'd take a trip up to Mid Wales to meet up with some freinds of Sarah's. The first day was a scorcher and gave us a great chance to chill out and check the latest Blast kit from Epic Kites. There was just enough breeze to fly the kites on the beach so we had a fun few hours in the sun.

Later we got a call from Rachel to meet up with them for a session with the wakeboard boat in the estuary, the conditions were awesome....flat water and hot! We spent the next few hours blasting about with both the doughnut and wakeboards, tired we headed back to Rachel's family place nearby for a cold beer and a well earned curry!

The next day was a bit overcast so we went for a "full English" in a local cafe before heading back to the estuary for a spot of Stand Up Paddlesurfing. The conditions for this were ideal...flat shallow water.

Whilst playing on these for a while the wind seemed to be picking up so I pumped up the Epic Renegade 11m which we'd heard so much about, especially it's low end wind range. Sarah took it out 1st but it was pretty light, she was just holding upwind which in itself was good especially as now the tide was rushing in and taking a lot of the ooomph out of the little wind there was.

We even managed to both be out on the SUP and kite together which was really cool. Monty even thought he'd have a go and joined me on the SUP for a closer look, his 1st time on the board.

Gradually the wind strengthened however and we both had a play on both the Renegade's 11m & 9m. These kites are pretty stunning, not just too look at which they most defiately are but also to fly, we had a great few hours playing in the flat water lagoons before heading back for more cold beers and bangers and mash!

Simply awesome wwekend and really loving the vibe on the beach with so many people really cracking it in harsh conditions too!

I'm a big believer in doing it in the real world as I have seen so many people over the years learn to kitesurf in the flatwater paradise destinations, some where warm sunny etc only too give up when they get back out on their local beaches with waves, currents, gusty winds etc etc
Over 20 people came along in what can be described as "challenging" conditions and all progressed amazingly well.

So to see them all mastering these conditions we have just had was a real treat. So many new acheivements by you all...1st runs, 1st jumps, 1st time toeside etc etc

It was great to see people all in the same boat meet up and share their experiences with each other.

Also a huge thakyou to those that helped over the weekend...

What a few days we've had!

We've had a bit of spell now of light to no wind days but with awesome weather especially for this time of the year.
Many of the local kitesurfers are pulling thier hair out and driving up and down the M4 desperately hunting the slightest whiff of a sea breeze.

Laura, loving the outdoors..kite or bike it doesnt matter to her!

However we've been making the most of the beautiful warm sunny conditions and been clocking up the miles on the MTB's and also venturing further afeild on the SUP's. Mountain Biking was one of my main sports along with surfing before I discovered Kitesurfing 11 years ago so it's a great feeling to be back in the saddle and once again hitting the amazing trails around Afan Argoed....the UK mecca and one the top ten in the World apparantly.

We paddled out to the Fairy Buoy.....flipping hard paddle back to the coast against the tide though! Fantastic to see the coast from so far out. Ive kited out there many times but it's difficult to really get up close and have a good look like we could on the SUP's.

When the winds eventually hit at least we will be refreshed and fit for it!

It seems we are teaching more and more girls in the past year or so, maybe because we have two female qualified instructors or maybe there are just a whole new breed of adrenaline addicted girls out there?
Whatever the reason it's great to see so many taking up the sport and gracing our beaches.

Even our Portugal trip is pretty much 50-50 female, pretty impressive when you consider over the two weeks there are over 30 people going this year!

We will definately be running a Girls W/End this summer once again and hope to see you all there!

At last the winds came back to grace our shores once again...it's been way to long. The sun was left behind but we simply didnt care...it was small kite weather and there were waves.

We got the chance to try some of the new kit we have been desperate to try for so long inc. Best Kahoona V3's, JN Prima Donna's, Mutiny, Wainman, Fluid ATV's and ofcourse the Genetrix Origin v2

We are now back to settled fine weather with the sun back warmer than ever with a real nice swell pushing in too.

We certainly seem to be getting some summer breeze's of late....yesterday was a classic case. Wind was forecast as light N.Easterly (offshore) so we packed the van with SUP's and MTB's for some alernative action.
As we were leaving Porthcawl we thought we'd drive past the beach....just to check.
There was a nice steady seabreeze building so we quickly got changed and were all over it for an hour or two.
The Fluid ATV 12m was once again our weapon of choice as it pulls like a truck but steers like a gokart...love it!

The week coming see's us heading back to more seasonal weather with some deep lows approaching so hopefully we will get the chance to try our small kites that have arrived at Blast but not been tried yet.

Genetrix Kites, a new drive forward.

Genetrix is a very well know kite brand within France with a huge heritage that goes back over 10 years but untill now it has had very little coverage both here in the UK and also in other parts of the world.

Now word is spreading about their performance/build quality and price!

Kiteworld will feature the new adverts during 2011 with both the Origin and Hydra due for tests in the coming season. There has already been an interview with Pro speed freak Seb Catelan and Fred from Xelerator featuring Genetrix and there is more in the pipeline.

They have broken pretty much every speed record with the Hydra and are the 1st to break the mythical 50knots and now 55knots. Now with the Genetrix Origin they are making waves into the wave/freeride/freestyle side of the sport.

2011 is going to be a great year for Genetrix

This month's magazine is a great one for us at Blast Kiteboarding as it features many of the brands we have been shouting about for the past few years.

Genetrix have a double page advert, there 1st in a UK mag. This follows loads of articles etc in the last mag featuring the Genetrix Hydra kite used to break 8 national speed records last year.

There is also a test on the Zeeko Krush plus advert which gets rave reviews.

Also tested is the Xelerator Epic which as usual gets top marks.

Lastly Fluid Kites have there ATV kite tested in Cape Town in harsh gusty conditions and they loved it and that's before they even mention the price!!

Another week slumming it onboard the "Meercat" with Zenith Ocean Voyages. Cant believe my month working with them is almost up....loved every minute of it too.

I have kited some of the best spots this planet can offer and also met some great guys, John, Nate, Flo, Domonique, Hans, Cecilia and of course Ged & Susy.

The food has been exceptional and cant think of anywhere I'd rather be kiting right now.

Well another week is over and another group of clients are about to leave us here on the The Meercat. The past week we have had awesome winds in both Barbuda and Antigua at Green Island. The gusests have included a Norwegian couple plus some pro riders from Naish Kites, making a promo video to be released soon.
Next week is my last week with Zenith Ocean Voyages (for now at least) and we have a group of Russians joining us once again for our trip to Barbuda.
Then I fly home in time for the Blast Frozen Jam!

Had an amazing day today with the guests on the yacht....and guess what we had no wind!

Had an amazing snorkle on the reefs and had the goodforyune to to see a stingray up close, even managed to get it on video. Then we had the rib out with with the surfboard in some super flat water...what a sweet day!

Green Island, Antigua 12th Feb 2011

We've just travelled a few hours up the coast to Green Island just off the coast of Antigua. Pretty lumpy sail up here with some squalls coming through and a small swell running head on too.
The Zenith Ocean Voyages cat The Meercat is achored litterally right next to the spot although we will be launching off the back of the yacht anyway.
The kite spot here is a real small stretch of sand but once launched there is a huge bay of flat clear blue cystal water to play on. The wind is a little light at the moment (15knots) but there are still about 4-5 people out playing.
There is a school here 40Knots.net that operates here and wow what a place to run a school. All the teaching is done from the ribs following the students....very nice.

I am proud to be associated with Blast kiteboarding And Wainman Kites and boards.
As Marc has mentioned i started kitesurfing right st the very start of the sport, There were no water relauchable kites then and no twin tip boards. I started out on a 4.9 Flexifoil Blade and a 6ft 6" surfboards with straps. The learning curve was intresting to say the least with very limited saftey.

I was associated to Naish from their very first kites, and developed some twip tip boards with the help of local surfboard shaper Roger cooper, The sport was moving so fast that almost every new article in the magazines showed new boards and developments in the kites. With ever improving riders such as Mark Shinn, Danny Searles and Jason Furness pushing the boundries of the sport. These riders i got to know very well over the years.

back in the day there were mainly 3 Brands who produced both kites and boards.

WIPIKA: was led by a team of French guys who were right up there with riders such as Franz Olry who is now associated with Wainman, and Seb Cattalan who is still pushing the boundries with GENETRIX Kites and world speed records.

NAISH: Led by Robby naish and designer Don Monitguie and the team in Maui which included Flash Austin and the person that was pulling all the moves you see today over 10years ago Mr LOU Wainman.

CABRINHA Again based in Maui led by Pete Cabrhina and a team of local riders who again pushed the develpoments of the sport.

Board design has changed dramaticly with numerous and different types and styles available, believe me i have had the lot, from surfboards to really small Twin tips ( 115), to mutants to stubbie mutants back to twip tips with 6 fins, twip tips with fins in the rail, production boards, custom boards.

Kites pretty much remained the same with slight tweaks here and there in material and what some called gimmicks, but it wasn't until the era of bridled kites that the sport really changed for the better of all.

If you see me at the beach say hi and have a chat, if you would like to demo the kites, and boards i am using then ill gladly let you use them.

My one word of advice for the beginner's out there is Please please please have lessons i have gone through and seen some really shocking incidents. Professional advice from Blast Kiteboarding is the best investment you can make.

What a great day...again! Two sweet sessions in pretty mild conditions too. Above photo is my beloved Sarah really getting to grips with the 9m Mutiny F.Series Kite.

We were just about to head off to the beach for a session with some of the new kit we have. Sarah still had not had chance to try the Wainman kites and was desperate for a full day on the water.
Just as we were leaving for the beach with some mates DHL rocked up in there van....Bingo!

Yup the new Mutiny kites arrived just in time for a sweet session in 25mph + winds. It was a great chance to try our new kites back to back...Mutiny/Wainman/Genetrix/Zeeko
One thing that was clear is that there is no one kite that is better than the next, each person who tried them had there own favorite.

The Mutiny loves to be flown with spirit and rewards you with smooth effortless performance, the jumps were extremely lofty & very floaty.The kite flys very far forward in the window and is strikingly narrower than many of the new delta kites available from many brands now.The higer aspect shape of this kite helps with it's impressive upwind performance. Kiteloops were....well, huge! Can't wait to really spend some more time dialing in to the kites.

The attention to detail on the kites is simply stunning, this kite really is of the highest quality possible.
We spent a good 3 hours giving the kites a good thrashing in winds that peaked at over 30mph at times and loved every minute of it both on the TT and the surfboards.

Blast are super stoked to have hooked up big time with the guys at Zenith Ocean Voyages. I will be spending a month Teaching (and lots of scubbing the decks so I've been told) from next month.

I met the owners Ged and Susy a few years back while kitesurfing abroard and have watched them work hard ever since to start there new venture together. This is not just a dream it truly is a passion and bloody hard graft too. Ged has already worked on Charter Yachts for many years and they are both super keen kitesurfers too.

I will post up here and on our blog updates whenever I can get wifi. It's planned that we will be in some wavespots during the trip.

They also have a planned visit for Naish Pro rider and photog to be with us for a week too so it will be cool to report on this from an regular kitesurfers point of view. No idea yet who this will be.

Brecon Beacons 19th December

A few of us (actually I counted 12) trecked up the Beacons with huge expectations after all the snow we have had in the past. We met at the car park at Storey Arms and spotted a few kites already up on the peak in the clouds.
Unfortunately after the slog up the hill we found there was simply not enough wind. Wenglish tried with his 9.5m HQ foil kite but ....nada!
Still it was a good afternoon out and we did get to snowboard back down!

Woke up to find another dump of the white gold here in South Wales. There was no wind but a nice wave coming in at Rest Bay. Looks like it could be on for tomorrow (Sunday) up the Beacons for a proper snow kite session!

What a fantastic day we've had today! Woke up too a total white out here in S.Wales and quickly realised the wind was building too. So once we'd loaded the car and slid most of the way to Rest Bay, Porthcawl we quickly set up our 7m Kites and were on it!

We had two sessions and were joined by our good friend Alun J who was on his 5.5m and still well powered up. It looks like we should have a shit load more snow over the w/end so are hoping to get up the Brecon Beacons (if they open the roads)

Stay safe this winter!

As winter approaches for surfers of the Northern Hemisphere, some safety procedures should be taken into consideration. It's cold, windy, rainy and snowy so you should protect your body for the physical exercise in extreme conditions.

The Irish Surfing Association has published a very clear and useful guide for the winter surfing sessions. Wave fans should have in mind that their health is first and that doesn't mean they cannot enjoy the quality ocean moments.

Here are the main guidelines for winter time surfing:

a) Do not surf alone or enter the water as dusk is approaching or if you have been drinking alcohol.

b) Warm your body before and after surfing. A good hot chocolate or a tea is perfect.

c) Eat foods that are high in carbohydrates. Fruits, breads and energy bars are a good choice.

d) Always let somebody on land know where you have gone and when you will return. Avoid surfing alone.

e) Check the weather and tides before you paddle out. Learn to observe the ocean so you can identify rips, wind changes and other hazards.

f) If you are unfamiliar with a break check with local surfers or other water users before paddling out.

g) Ensure the waves you are surfing are of a size and power suitable to your ability. Do not get too confident. Stick to beaches until you become experienced.

g) Make sure your equipment, especially your leash is in good order. Remember it is much easier to spot a brightly coloured surfboard or wetsuit at sea in the event of you requiring rescuing. Consider other safety equipment_ nose guard and helmet.

i) When you “wipeout” do not come to the surface too soon and when you do come to the surface protect your head with your arms.

j) If you get caught in a rip do not try to paddle against it, paddle across it.

k) If you find yourself in difficulty stay calm, do not discard your board, wave one are in the air and shout to attract attention. Do not panic, help will come.

Background: Seb “Catman” Cattellan (Genetrix/Xelerator) is both the organizer of the Luderitz Speed Challenge held annually in Luderitz, Namibia and a fearsome competitor in that same event. He shocked the speed world by breaking the 50 knot record in 2008, and wrote his name in the history books again this year by being the first kiter or sailor of any discipline to reach 55 knots over a 500 meter course, while also taking home the French and European records in what has traditionally been a completely French-dominated event.

Only this year, an American (Rob Douglas) was able to snatch the overall record from Seb by 15 hundredths of a knot, bringing the overall record to America for the first time in memory and laying the groundwork for what is certain to become a battle royale between speed sailors from old world and the new in years to come.

- How was your journey to becoming the fastest speed sailor in France and Europe with a record of 55.49 knots over 500m?

Above all it was a result of a strong team around me; I couldn’t have done it without them. It seems obvious to say this but this is probably the biggest part of my performance. The trust and support of my better half, my family, my friends, and my team were all integral. Through their support and faith, from the very beginning I was able to find the strength to keep me going. This was key during this fourth edition of the Speed Challenge, now that the level of competition has increased dramatically.

I clearly recall the run when I broke the world sailing speed record. Despite a bad start, I knew this run was good. When I crossed the finish line in a spray of white water and heard shouting, I knew that this could be potentially great news. At the sight of the display board, Martial Camblong from Genetrix, my kite sponsor jumped on me saying “Bloody hell, you exploded the clock!”

My life flashed by me: the successes and failures in my career since my start in freestyle in 2000, successive battles related to the organization of this completely insane competition in the Namibian desert, where the hard work of the past four years paid off.

The thing to understand is that being able to set records like this is the culmination of so much effort! It's tough to explain...

Even assuming Rob Douglas ends up with the official world record with 55.65, getting my records was a great moment for me. I believe my tenacity in facing what was at stake allowed me to combine my athletic and organizing abilities. Wearing two hats in moments like this is physically and mentally challenging, but I managed to do it.

One may ask why am I crazy enough to both organize the event and compete in it. I would say that I’m fortunate to do both! The speed canal that I dug is my baby ... it is hard to imagine but each angle of the run has to be positioned exactly, every detail is considered, so all my years of experience have really helped in its realization. Finally, I compete because this is why I am here, still taking part despite my seniority. I'm still trying to improve and pass down the knowledge I have learned. It is my reason to live. It's not a job, it's a passion that never dies ...

- What changes have you made this year regarding your fitness and training as well as your equipment?

This is the first time that I used a physical trainer in my preparation. Thanks to a customized training program from this Olympic coach, it boosted my potential. He also worked on my diet, and gave me a nutritional regimen for before, during and after intense physical effort in a competition like this one.

My progression also benefited from having coached Sophie in speed kiting for months. Finally, an intense and regular interaction with Martial ultimately paid off. Having worked extensively on research and development, the 9m Genetrix Hydra revealed itself to be the ultimate weapon for me. Very difficult to do better.

Board-wise, the South African brand Xelerator intensifies its development by participating frequently in the speed event, to better understand the needs of this discipline.

- You were the world record holder for a brief period before Rob Douglas during that epic day when both of you crossed the 55 knot barrier. What was your first reaction when you realized you'd just given him your first place?

"It's the law of the jungle, except that I am a cat and a cat has nine lives..."

- You're a competitor and organizer. Your point of view?

The fact that I am also a competitor is a weakness for me and that I am also the organizer is a strength for the other competitors.

- What has been most striking in the 2010 edition of the Speed Challenge?

The smiles on the competitors’ faces when they see their extraordinary times on the results board. It is my reward.

- The windsurfers were invited to the party this year -- what is your assessment of the outcome for them?

It was the first time we tried to be constructive together to try to develop valid competitive conditions for them. It made me think of our transition 2007-2008 where we had changed the run for the first time. We deduced certain things and avoided some problems for windsurfers. I have tried hard to integrate their needs into the competition so that many possibilities are open to them. I think that windsurfers can go faster than kiters. They simply need an appropriate playground.

- As an organizer, how did you get to come up with a run of 500 meters capable of recording average speeds of over 100 km / h?

I did countless tests with my GPS to learn in detail the necessary elements while taking into account various criteria. You have to take into consideration biology, currents, tides, weather and the fact that our competition was held in a natural reserve. A Namibian headache! Yet, there were still a few disgruntled people who did not realize the magnitude of the accomplishment in simply hosting an event like this. To them I say: never bite the hand that feeds you.

- You promised 50 knots in 2008. It happened. You have predicted the 100 km / h for this year. Four competitors (including yourself) made it. What can we expect next, is 60 knots possible?

I am proud to have lent credibility to my event by giving riders a chance to prove themselves.

Until now, the best ever recorded top speed on GPS is 62 knots (see www.gps-kitesurfing.com). (I set this record using the Genetrix Hydra). On a run like this year’s, with that kind of top speed, an average of 60 knots in the 500m is achievable, but for that I still think there will need to be a step up in the development of the gear and a tweaking of the run.

Now the long range forecasts show likely snow for the coming weekend....and wind.

Taro Niehaus alias Litey, South African rider joined the team Genetrix. Veteran freestyler, he has also excelled during the Luderitz Speed Challenge 2010, achieving the eighth fastest time with 50.62 knots.
